4 Day Workshop

Explore the versatility and richness of charcoal!
Charcoal is a great medium for quickly creating dynamic images with a full range of values. In this four (4) day workshop, Doug Fedrau 🔗 guides students through techniques for working in charcoal.   Different materials and ways to get your images onto the page will be explored.
Workshop Outline
Monday – Introduction to charcoal. We’ll look at the materials and techniques and start a simple charcoal drawing (image will be provided). Here we’ll put into practice techniques for blending and developing the values in your drawing. Student photo references for Wednesday’s class will be reviewed and discussed – please bring photos/images of what you might draw later in the week.
Tuesday – Creating textures and hair. After looking at techniques to render textures and hair, we’ll put those lessons to work on a drawing with a drawing of an animal (image will be provided).
Wednesday – In this class, we will work on the drawing of your choice. Doug’s demonstration will be using a photo of a portrait, but you are welcome to bring a landscape, architectural or any other image you choose to work on.
Thursday – The final class will be for finishing up the drawings from the previous class. Students who complete their drawing on the previous day can bring in another reference image to get started on.
