4 Days
In this immersive four-day, hands-on workshop, unlock the beauty of oil painting through guided exploration of color mixing and image analysis. Students will deepen their understanding of tone, composition, and technique while learning different approaches to beginning a painting, from transferring an image with charcoal to sketching directly with charcoal or paint. Participants are encouraged to bring a well-lit photograph of their chosen subject, ideally featuring strong contrasts with part of the face in shadow. Whether you’re new to water-soluble oils or refining your approach, this workshop will equip you with essential skills for creating expressive, lifelike paintings.
Course Outline
Day 1: We will do a master study to introduce to students to colour mixing and how to analyze an image for oil painting. We will also discuss different ways of beginning a painting, such as transferring the image with charcoal or doing the initial drawing directly with charcoal or paint.
Day 2: Students will bring in a photograph of a subject they wish to paint. It is recommended
that the photo be well lit with at least part of the face in shadow.
Optionally, students may work on the master copy from the previous class or do another one
based on the artist of their choice.
Days 3 and 4: Students will continue to work on their own project with advice from the
instructor.
