The Road to Abstraction

This Acrylic class is about exploration, thinking outside the box, stepping away from routine, and expressing your creativity in a new way.

A kid’s class for adults. In this class we will work our way to Abstraction. We will approach compositions with purpose using the principles and elements of Design. We will explore materials using different techniques and other water media finding out just how far we can push a painting. Some prior knowledge of drawing and painting will be an asset. Subject matter/ images will be chosen by the instructor.

Suggested Material List:

  • PAINTS:
    Student grade heavy body tube acrylics (eg. Liquitex)
    Cadmium red hue, cadmium yellow hue, cerulean blue hue,
    titanium white, and mars black.
  • A small bottle of white gesso.
    No mediums are necessary at this point (will discuss).
  • PAINT TOOLS:
    A 3/4” synthetic flat brush. A 1/2” synthetic flat brush.
    A no.4 and no.10 synth round liner brush for detail work.
    A defunct credit card or plastic palette knife.
    Black china marker and 2 water soluble crayons (fave colors).
  • SURFACES:
    Sealed acrylic paper, and/or sealed watercolour paper.
    Use 16×20 as your base sheet size. For example,
    a half sheet of watercolor paper is 15×22, close enough.
    Not any larger than 18×24.
    Watercolour paper should have a thorough coat of
    gesso applied so the paint can move smoothly.
  • OTHER:
    A mixing palette (old white dinner plate), water spray
    bottle, paper towel and box of kleenex.
    Sketch paper, pencil, and an eraser.
  • P.S.
    No one is expected to purchase new supplies when you have your own. The above is a guide.
    We want to focus on the surface and size of what we create. So, Nothing small and You will be working flat.
